Irish Eye: Long on song for the second week running

There were plenty more goals for Ireland’s representatives in England and Scotland this weekend. Find out who did what in our weekly review.

Premier League

Shane Long (Chelsea 2-1 West Brom) Long made it two goals from two Premier League starts at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, muscling Alex off the ball before racing clear and wrongfooting Hilario with a neat finish.

Paddy Kenny (Everton 0-1 QPR) Kenny enjoyed his first clean sheet of the season as Neil Warnock’s side held on for an important 1-0 win on the road.

Kevin Doyle (Wolves 2-0 Fulham) Doyle showed that injury hasn’t dulled his ability to find the net. He opened the scoring at Molineux yesterday when he dug the ball out from under his feet and found a yard of space before finishing high into the roof of Mark Schwartzer’s net.

Npower Championship

Kevin Kilbane (Derby 3-0 Doncaster) He might be getting on in years, but Kilbane still knows where the goal is. On loan from Hull City, he headed Derby into the lead after just six minutes on Saturday.

Keith Andrews (Peterborough 7-1 Ipswich) Keith Andrews’ Saturday got off to a good start when he fired home a beautiful volley to put Ipswich ahead after 23 minutes. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from that point onwards as the Posh hit back with seven of their own.

Adam Rooney (Middlesbrough 3-1 Birmingham) Rooney gave Birmingham the lead with his first goal of the season on 36 minutes, dusting himself off and converting the penalty after he had been fouled by keeper Carl Ikeme.

Ian Harte and Noel Hunt (Reading 1-2 Barnsley) Between them, Harte and Hunt managed to miss two penalties within the space of three second-half minutes on Saturday. When Reading were awarded a third spot-kick 15 minutes from time, Hal Robson-Kanu showed them how it’s supposed to be done.

League One

Harry Arter (Carlisle 2-1 Bournemouth) 21-year-old Arter grabbed his third of the season from the spot to level Saturday’s game at 1-1, but it wasn’t enough to stop Bournemouth from falling to their third defeat in four games.

Jay O’Shea (MK Dons 6-2 Chesterfield) Ex-League of Ireland man Jay O’Shea was on the mark from the spot as well, wrapping up MK Dons’ 6-2 win in the 87th minute.

Jon Macken (Walsall 1-1 Yeovil) Macken opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a beautiful curling effort from the edge of the area.

Scottish Premier League

Richie Foran (Aberdeen 2-1 Inverness CT) Foran opened his account for the season when he capitalised on some sloppy defending by Youl Mawene to give Cally a lifeline with 11 minutes to play.

Good weekend for…

Kevin Doyle. With the games against Slovakia and Russia just around the corner, now is a good time to start finding the net.

Bad weekend for…

Ian Harte and Noel Hunt. Seriously, lads, sort it out.
