LIAM DUNNE WARNED that “no one man is the bigger than the team” as the uncertainty over Jack Guiney’s Wexford future dragged on.
A disciplinary breach saw Guiney dropped for Sunday’s 24-point hammering by Kilkenny and Dunne would not say if his star forward will be recalled this summer.
Wexford will have home advantage against Cork in a fortnight’s time in the pick of the Round 1 qualifiers.
“Look, you want your best players all the time,” Dunne said. “The player in question has potential to be one of the best players in Ireland, let alone in Wexford.
“You have to treat everyone the same. You’ve 33 guys in a panel that are rowing the one way with you. Sometimes you have to make decisions and tough calls.
I’m just hoping that the short-term pain with that player will be long-term gain with Wexford.
Wexford managed just seven points from play as they were steamrolled by a clinical and ruthless Kilkenny in Nowlan Park.
Guiney’s absence split the RTÉ Sunday Game panel with Tomás Mulcahy backing the player while Ger Loughnane sided with Dunne’s hardline approach.
The onus now appears to be on Guiney to make the first move if he wants to be involved on 4 July.
“Well, the door would be open for Martin Storey after that game to be honest with you,” Dunne said.
“That’s for another day. We’ll take our beating, we got hurled out the door, and we’ll see what’s left in us for the next day.”
He added:
I don’t make rules, I’ve never made rules. We set standards.
“It is up to a guy to do whatever he wants to do, but you are expecting 33 or 34 guys in a panel to row in the one way behind you.
“Guys have a choice and look they are amateur players. If a guy wants to do it, he wants to do it, and if he doesn’t, he doesn’t and then he moves aside and lets somebody else in to do it really.
“I want my best players available to me at all times but no one man is bigger than the team.”
