James McCartan to stay on as Down manager

Niall Moyna and Jerome Johnston remain as McCartan’s support staff.

DOWN HAVE CONFIRMED that James McCartan will remain as manager of the senior football squad, ending speculation that he would leave the county in the aftermath of the All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Derry.

McCartan’s backroom team of Niall Moyna and Jerome Johnston will also continue in their existing roles.

Down Chairman Seamus Walsh said that McCartan’s future as manager had never been in major doubt, but that the county board had undertaken a review of the season’s results and performances.

Speaking to the Irish News, Walsh said:

“The full team is in place, no changes. James just wanted to have a break and make sure everything was in place for next year. He is a Down man through and through and is eager to get going again.”

Down were beaten by Donegal in the Ulster Championship semi-finals, before a 0-13 to 1-5 loss to Derry in the All-Ireland qualifiers back in July.

It has also been confirmed that Down’s senior hurling coach Gerard Monan has been retained.
