Johann Muller to consider retirement at end of season

‘Let’s see how the season goes,’ the Springbok said of his chances of playing beyond next May.

ULSTER CAPTAIN JOHANN Muller today hinted that this season with Ulster Rugby could well be his last as a professional.

The 2007 World Cup winner with South Africa is in the final year of his current contract with the northern province.

And, after what he called a ‘horrible’ season in which he missed out large chunks of playing time through thumb and arm injuries, the 33-year-old says he will not be looking for lucrative playing opportunities in France in 2014.

After being asked about his fellow countryman Ruan Pienaar’s likely move to Toulon, Muller responded:

“Unlike Ruan I’m old. He’s still young, he has plenty of years to go. We’ll take it as it comes.”

The 24-cap Springbok added: “At this stage, I’ve got to listen to my body. last year was obviously a horrible year for me from an injury point of view.

“Let’s see how this season goes from an injury point of view before I make any decisions.”

As for the goal-kicking scrum-half, Pienaar will return to Ulster training next Monday in time to start either round one or two of the Heineken Cup.

Head coach Mark Anscombe joked, “I hope hedoesn’t get too much game time for South Africa this week, then he’ll be fit and ready to go against Leicester.”
