ASTON VILLA MANAGER Paul Lambert says that Shay Given will not be allowed to leave the club on loan during the January transfer window.
The former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper lost his place in the team to Brad Guzan in August and his only appearances since have come in the Capital One Cup against former club Manchester City and Swindon.
Given had been linked with a loan move to Hull City but former Norwich City boss Lambert says that he needs two high quality goalkeepers in his squad.
He said: “Has there been any interest in Given? I haven’t a clue. Honestly, I’ve not had that conversation and he hasn’t said. I’m just happy to have two quality goalkeepers here.
“Am I tempted to send Given on loan? No, I wasn’t tempted. You need the two of them to push each other. The fact Brad has got Shay breathing down his neck, I’m sure is driving him on.”
The 36-year-old Given played Villa’s opening two matches of the season against West Ham and Everton, but poor performances in those games allowed Guzan – who left the club in the summer before re-signing on a three year contract – to take his place.
