Leona Maguire completes memorable week by winning prestigious amateur award at the Open

The Cavan native continues to impress on the world stage.

ALTHOUGH SHE DROPPED down the leaderboard on Sunday, Leona Maguire claimed the prestigious top amateur award at the Ricoh British Open this afternoon.

The 21-year-old once again showed all her promise with a sparkling performance at Woburn to lift the coveted Smyth Salver following a 25th place finish.

Maguire finished six strokes ahead of the next best amateur, her Curtis Cup team-mate Bronte Law, despite a final round of 75.

After hitting the turn level par, the Cavan native — who started the final round in the top 10 — carded three costly bogeys down the home straight to finish three-over for the day and four-under for the tournament.

Maguire’s attention now turns to the Olympics, where she will compete for Team Ireland alongside Pádraig Harrington, Seamus Power and Stephanie Meadow.

Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn won her first Major with a three-shot victory at Woburn.
