Listen: Legendary GAA announcer Sean Óg Ó Ceallacháin calls it for the last time

After a record-breaking stint in front of the microphone, Ó Ceallacháin signs off for the last time.

FOR GENERATIONS OF GAA supporters broadcaster Seán Óg Ó Ceallacháin was the soundtrack to Sunday nights.

But last night the Limerick man offered his last “Go mBeannaí Dia díobh go leir”.

Ó Ceallacháin delivered a comprehensive round-up of Gaelic football and hurling results from throughout the country every Sunday night.

Having joined his father on the programme in 1948 – broadcasting as Gaeilge – he ultimately took over the job in 1953.

When his father developed a bad cough, Radio Eireann bosses forced Seán Óg to break the news of Sean Snr’s sacking.

He bade farewell last night having secured his place in the record books; he will appear in the Guinness Book of Records next year as the longest-serving sports broadcaster.

But last night he revealed was a “sad one”. Listen here:

Seán Óg says goodbye

He goes out on a high however. Last week Ó Ceallacháin  announced a Dublin senior hurling title for the first time in his long career. Before their famous win over Kilkenny in Croke Park eight days ago, the last time the Dubs won the national league Ó Ceallacháin was part of the team.

In a sign of the times, RTÉ will now call time on the weekly results programme.
