Joined Newcastle for €10.5 million from Deportivo in 2005, the Spanish international was rated highly in La Liga but managed just one goal over the course of 21 appearances in two seasons with the Magpies, sealing his status as one of the worst-ever Premier League signings in the process.

He was sold in 2007 to Ajax for just €2.3 million, and was similarly underwhelming at the Dutch club and later Malaga, before retiring in 2011.
