Round-Up

Local heroes: everything you need to know about yesterday's county finals

Another ten county titles were dished out on a busy day of GAA action yesterday. Here’s your round-up of all the winners and losers.

Kildare SFC Final

Athy 2-11 Carbury 2-07 James Eaton’s first-minute goal launched a blistering start for Athy in Newbridge yesterday as they raced into a 2-05 to 0-03 lead with just 16 minutes played. To their credit, Carbury battled back and only trailed by two as the game entered its final three minutes before Terry Rossiter kicked a pair of points to clinch Athy’s first county title in 24 years.

Offaly SFC Final

Clara 0-08 Edenderry 0-09 Underdogs Edenderry could be forgiven for thinking that yesterday was not to be their day when penalty specialist Mark Young skied his spot-kick in the second half. But the young guns held on to upset Clara by the narrowest of margins in O’Connor Park, captain Richie Dalton leading by example with five points from midfield.

Monaghan SFC Final

Latton 1-06 Scotstown 0-08 Latton left it late before snatching a third county title in four years in a scrappy contest in Inniskeen. With driving wind and rain prohibiting any attempts at flowing football, Owen Duffy’s injury-time point proved to be the sole difference in their win over Scotstown.

Roscommon SFC Final

Elphin 0-08 St Brigid’s 1-09 But for a late Damien Kelleher goal, it could have been a very different story in Dr Hyde Park yesterday as St Brigid’s squeezed past Elphin to retain their Roscommon crown. After some wonderful play by Senan Kilbride, Kelleher pounced in the 57th minute to see Brigid’s over the line.

Wexford SHC Final

Oulart-the-Ballagh 1-10 Rathnure 0-11 Wexford hurling is in danger of becoming a little bit predictable, not that Oulart-the-Ballagh will be too bothered. They claimed a hattrick of county titles in an uninspiring contest at Wexford Park yesterday, boosted by Frank Cullen goal which came after just nine minutes.

Laois SHC Final

Clough-Ballacolla 1-10 Portlaoise 0-11 A repeat of the 2009 county final in all bar the margin of victory, Clough-Ballacolla left O'Moore Park as Laois hurling champions. A disallowed goal 10 minutes from time was a cruel blow for Portlaoise who nonetheless cut the margin to a single point before a late Willie Hyland saw Ballacolla over the line.

London SHC Final

Robert Emmets 2-14 St Gabriels 1-11 Robert Emmets took control of yesterday's final in Ruislip with a commanding second-half performance, sealing their six-point victory when Peter Atkinson was on hand to opportunistically flick home a goal seven minutes from time.

Meath SHC Final

Kildalkey 3-11 Navan O'Mahonys 0-10 Underdogs Navan O'Mahonys fell disappointingly short in their attempt to cause an upset in Pairc Tailteann yesterday. Instead, a Derek Doran brace and a speculative Sean Corrigan effort laid the groundwork for Kildalkey to win their third county hurling title on the bounce.

Carlow SHC Final (Replay)

Mt Leinster Rangers 2-12 Naomh Eoin 3-05 Mt Leinster Rangers scored a four-point victory over Naomh Eoin in a fiery replay at Dr Cullen Park, Denis Murphy and Willie Hickey chipping in with the crucial goals from the full-forward line.

Sligo SHC Final

Calry/St Joseph's 2-07 Tubbercurry 0-12 Calry/St Joseph's clung on by their fingertips yesterday to claim a fourth Sligo SHC title in five years, beating dear rivals Tubbercurry by a single point at the end of a tight and tense contest. Centre-forward Keith Raymond topped the scoring charts, adding four frees and a 65 to his sole point from play.
