Manchester City sign Benfica keeper Ederson for €40m

The Brazilian will join the club on 1 July.

MANCHESTER CITY HAVE completed the signing of Benfica goalkeeper Ederson Moraes for £34.7 million.

The 23-year old will move to the Premier League on 1 July after signing a five-year deal at the Ethiad.

The fee is significantly larger than the £18.9m — then a British record for a goalkeeper — Manchester United paid Atletico Madrid for David de Gea six years ago.

However, because of exchange rate differences, it is less than the €53m Juventus paid Parma for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.

[For those wondering, Ederson's deal would be worth approximately €57.6m in 2001 money]

“I like everything about Manchester City,” he said after signing the deal.

This is a great club, they have amazing fans and they play splendid football. I have always had the dream to play in English football and now I’m going to make it true.

“With Pep Guardiola, City are growing more and more. He is putting in place a young team for the future. Those were important factors in making my decision.”

Under the terms of the deal, the 23-year-old’s former club Benfica only receive 50%, with his previous Portuguese club Rio Ave pocketing 30% and Gestifute, the agency run by super agent Jorge Mendes, the remaining 20%
