Remember the most famous goal in a Clare Cork match in Ennis?

It’s 16 years since Martin Daly fired home THAT goal for Clare.

CLARE ENTER TOMORROW’S Munster senior football semi-final against Cork as rank outsiders.

But as they enter the match in Cusack Park, they can recall a famous day 16 years ago at the Ennis venue when they toppled the Rebels in sensational fashion.

Deep into injury-time of the 1997 provincial semi-final Clare trailed Cork, who were managed for the first time in championship that day by Larry Tompkins, by 1-13 to 0-14.

But then Clare’s Martin Daly cut through for a dramatic match-winning goal after the Lissycasey man received a free from St Senan’s Kilkee player Ger Keane.  The Cork players slumped to the ground in despair while Clare celebrated wildly after a famous success.

Recent senior football championship meetings between the counties have gone the way of Cork as they have won the last five clashes including the two in Ennis when they won the All-Ireland qualifier in 2004 by 0-15 to 0-11 and the Munster semi-final in 2005 by 0-18 to 0-6.

Yet Clare wil be hoping to reprise the heroics of June 22nd 1997.

Here’s Martin Daly’s famous goal from that day.
