Meyler placed on standby as final 23-man Ireland squad announced

Meanwhile, Joey O’Brien could play for West Ham tomorrow despite being made unavailable to face Austria and Sweden.

DAVID MAYLER HAS been placed on standby as Giovanni Trapattoni’s final Ireland squad to face Austria and Sweden in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers was announced this evening.

The Hull man has ultimately missed out on a place in the 23, with others being preferred in the central midfield position.

Meanwhile, it was earlier announced that Aiden McGeady, Sean St Ledger and Joey O’Brien would be unavailable due to injury, though a statement explained that O’Brien could still feature for West Ham tomorrow. It read:

“Our medical teams were speaking prior to Joey’s withdrawal from the Irish squad. A decision was reached based on Joey’s serious knee injury sustained two years ago, and he requires treatment during the international window next week after a patellar tendon flare up.

“The manager has given his blessing to this as we have sufficient cover on this occasion. He may feature for his club tomorrow.”

In addition, it was also confirmed that Paddy Madden will miss the games, after he suffered a knee injury, while Jeff Hendrick has also been ruled out.

Final Ireland squad to face Sweden and Austria: David Forde, Keiren Westwood, Darren Randolph, John O’Shea, Marc Wilson, Seamus Coleman, Stephen Kelly, Darren O’Dea, Ciaran Clark, Richard Dunne, Paul McShane, Glenn Whelan, James McCarthy, Paul Green, Anthony Pilkington, James McClean, Robbie Brady, Wes Hoolahan, Shane Long, Robbie Keane, Conor Sammon, Jon Walters, Simon Cox.
