GOALSCORING SPREES WERE key as NUI Galway recorded victories in the Fitzgibbon and Sigerson Cup today.
The Galway college’s hurlers defeated St Pat’s 4-14 to 1-11 in the Fitzgibbon Cup group stages while their footballers saw off Trinity College by 4-12 to 1-7 in the Sigerson Cup.
Clare senior defender Conor Cleary and Galway senior attacker Conor Whelan were both in action for NUI Galway in the Fitzgibbon Cup game. They trailed 0-11 to 0-8 at the break but it was a goal from Kilmaley player Cleary that set them on their way in the second-half.
Galway’s Kevin McHugo also hit the net while Tipperary’s Sam Conlon recorded a brace as they ran out 12-point victors.
NUIG’s next challenge will be a tougher one in the group stages as they face UL, emphatic victors over Cork IT yesterday.
In the Sigerson Cup, NUI Galway set up a meeting with St Mary’s (Belfast) in the first round after their preliminary round victory today.
They will have to travel away for that match but will be buoyed by today’s success with Mayo’s Adam Gallagher amongst their goalscorers and green flags also raised by Sean Kelly, Colm Kelly and Matt McClean.
A quarter-final meeting with DCU, impressive victors today against Queen’s University, awaits the winners of next week’s clash between NUI Galway and St Mary’s.
