Sligo Rovers appoint Owen Heary as new manager

The former defender has signed a two-year deal with the Bit O’Red.

SLIGO ROVERS HAVE announced the appointment of Owen Heary as their new manager.

The 38-year-old, who was in charge of Bohemians for the past year and a half, has signed a two-year deal with the Bit O’Red. He takes over from John Coleman who left the post last month to return to England.

“On behalf of Sligo Rovers I am delighted to welcome Owen to the Showgrounds and to be part of the Bit o’Red,” Sligo chairman Joe Burns said.

“Over the years we have all seen Owen play against us with a passion and determination which made him one of the outstanding full-backs in the league. In speaking to Owen over the last couple of weeks I have no doubt that he will bring these same qualities to our club in his role as manager.

“I very much look forward to working with him to bring Rovers back to where we want to be which is challenging for trophies and European qualification.”

Heary’s departure from Bohemians was confirmed on Friday evening after the club’s victory over Derry City. He spent five years at Dalymount Park as a player before taking over the managerial reigns midway through last season. After receiving the necessary coaching qualifications, he was appointed on a permanent basis at the start of the 2014 campaign, guiding the Gypsies to a 7th place finish.

“I am very pleased to become manager of Sligo Rovers. I am looking forward to taking on the job. It’s going to be a tough job but it’s a challenge and that’s what I want,” Heary said.

“I will be looking to hit the ground running. I want to see the club improve on this year’s finish and get back up near the top of the table because that is where I want to be.”My ambition for the club is to win trophies, qualify for European competition and challenge for league titles.”

During his playing career, Heary won seven league titles, two FAI Cup medals as well as the League and Setanta Sports Cup.
