FORMER PREMIER LEAGUE footballer Peter Ndlovu is said to be in a “stable condition” this evening following a car crash in Zimbabwe in which his brother died.
The crash which killed Adam Ndlovu, also a former Zimbabwean international, and a female passenger happened as the brothers were travelling near Victoria Falls early on Sunday.
Ndlovu, 39, was taken to a public hospital in Bulawayo, according to family friend George Bhebhe.
“He is in Mater Dei Hospital now and in a stable condition and we are waiting for other family members who will be able to give more details,” Bhebhe told AFP.
His former manager Winston Makamure told the BBC the player was “conscious and is communicating.”
“He has internal injuries, head injuries, broken ribs and a broken leg.”
In a statement, Coventry City said that it was “saddened” to hear of the tragedy. Ndlovu became a cult figure among fans during his time with the Sky Blues in the Premier League from 1991 to 1997.
The striker, dubbed “Nuddy”, also played for Birmingham City and Sheffield United as well as a short spell on loan at Huddersfield Town.
Zimbabwe’s Minister of Education, Sport and Culture David Coltart was among those to express condolences to the Ndlovu family.
“I am very sorry to hear of the death of Adam Ndlovu and the injury to Peter Ndlovu. Condolences to family and I wish Peter a speedy recovery.”
The statement issued by Coventry read: “Coventry City Football Club is saddened to hear of a tragic road accident in Zimbabwe that has left former striker Peter Ndlovu in a critical condition and claimed the life of his brother Adam.
“It has been reported that both were travelling from an away match between Chicken Inn FC and a local side when Ndlovu’s car suffered a tyre blow-out which caused the car to veer off the road 20km outside Victoria Falls.
“Ndlovu achieved iconic status during his six years with the Sky Blues where he netted 39 goals in 176 appearances for the club.
“Coventry City sends its best wishes and condolences to the Ndlovu family who will be in our thoughts.”
