Kerry's PS Chorca Dhuibhne retain Hogan Cup crown after victory over Roscommon CBS

The premier schools football trophy is heading back to the Kingdom.

PS CHORCA DHUIBHNE retained their Hogan Cup crown after they fashioned victory over Roscommon CBS in Croke Park yesterday.

The Kerry school lifted the title twelve months after their maiden success as they reeled off five points without reply in the closing stages to clinch the honours after Conor Shanagher’s second goal of the game had given Roscommon CBS a huge boost with eight minutes remaining.

But Cathal Bambury brought the Dingle-based school level soon after with a point before Seamus Ó Muircheartaigh (2), Gearóid Hici Ó Brosvnacháin and Conor Geaney raised white flags to seal their success.

PS Chorca Dhuibhne got an early fillip when they found the net in the 14th minute. Conor Geaney created the move before laying the ball across for Sean Ó Gairbhia who stormed through and finished emphatically to the net. That pushed them ahead 1-2 to 0-1 and settled the Kerry school as they came to terms with the massed defence that Roscommon CBS placed before them.

The Roscommon side warmed to their task with Noel Gately, who won a Connacht U21 medal with the county last weekend, and Richard Hughes justifying their billing as chief scorers as they landed points. Then three minutes before the interval Shanagher crashed home his first goal and Roscommon CBS had drawn level at 1-3 apiece by half-time.

The second-half saw PS Chorca Dhuibhne claim plenty possession but they struggled to translate that into scores. They hit 14 wides in all over the game and that meant Roscommon CBS were always able to stay in touch.

A Geaney point in the 45th minute pushed the winners 1-7 to 1-5 clear entering the final quarter. Roscommon CBS nearly hit the net in the 51st minute when Shanagher dragged a shot across the goal and the ball rolled narrowly wide but he made amends moments later when he timed his run to perfection and flicked home a shot by Gately that dropped short.

But the champions never lost their nerve. Driven on by Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Tom Ó Súilleabháin and Mark O’Connor – all Kerry All-Ireland minor winners last year – they powered to the finish line and clinched victory with a string of late points.
