HL Division 1A: Tipp continue flying form with 4 goals in Galway

Despite Joe Canning’s 1-10, The Tribesmen fell by 11 points at Pearse Stadium.

TIPPERARY ENJOYED AN encouraging road win in the west at Pearse Stadium as Galway were outfoxed by Eamonn O’Shea’s smashing team.

There was so much to admire about Tipperary, who blitzed the Tribesmen in Salthill, with Lar Corbett and John O’Dwyer carrying a potent attacking threat.

Corbett ended the contest with a 1-1, but his vision and ability to create chances vexed Galway all afternoon.

Inside O’Dwyer was efficient scoring 1-6 from play and Galway weren’t able to contain the dynamic Killenaule forward.

The visitors settled quickly as Galway custodian Fergal Flannery misjudged a third minute Brendan Maher sideline and Tipp got a lucky goal. But there was nothing fortunate about the way they stressed the Galway backs early on with Corbett displaying the dash of old.

Corbett was clever, while Shane Bourke, Seamus Callanan, and John O’Dwyer were motoring well too with James Woodlock prompting from centre field.

In the 18th minute Corbett crafted a chance for Bourke to blast a goal that had Tipp 2-7 to 0-5 ahead.

Tipp were 10 ahead at one stage, but a 23rd minute goal from a Joe Canning free helped trim the deficit, but the visitors stayed calm.

When the interval rolled around Tipp’s advantage stood at 2-13 to 1-9 and Galway were aware that significant improvements had to be made after the restart.

With Canning again providing leadership up front Galway got to within three points of Tipp by the 51st minute, but the Premier County ploughed on defiantly.

John O’Dwyer poked a 53rd minute goal showing real opportunism to flick the sliotar home following a Flannery save from Callanan. From then on it was only a matter of what score Tipp would prevail by, but Corbett was classy enough to cap a terrific cameo with a sweet goal.

Two minutes remained when Corbett skipped through the Galway defence to bat a goal that was a fitting end to a polished Tipp performance.
