ROBBIE KEANE WAS initially turned away by his local club and may never have risen to prominence in the football world had it not been for his older brother, he revealed in an interview on American TV recently.
The LA Galaxy star recalled how around 50 people attended trials for his local club, with the six-year-old Keane not making the cut.
“My brother brought me over when I was six years of age,” he recalled. “The manager picked 20 players and told the others to come back another day. I was one of those kids that was sent away because he just randomly picked them.
“So when the manager turned his back, my brother grabbed me and put me in with the kids who got picked, so from there on, I ended playing and scoring a lot of goals.”
Over the course of the interview, Keane also discussed a number of other topics.
- He thinks the US should have been given an opportunity to host the World Cup again in order to boost soccer’s popularity Stateside.
- He explained to the US TV audience what it was like being brought up on the mean streets of Tallaght.
