Shane Lowry makes FOURTH hole-in-one of his PGA Tour career

Lowry feels that he got ‘a lot of good’ out of Houston Open as he tunes up for The Masters.

SHANE LOWRY COULDN’T play his way into contention at the Houston Open – but he still managed to make it a memorable week with the fourth hole-in-one of his PGA Tour career.

Lowry, who started Sunday 13 shots behind clubhouse leader Gary Woodland, aced the 170-yard, par-three second hole to get his final round off to a flyer.

Remarkably, the Clara native has now had holes-in-one in three of the last five PGA Tour seasons, as well as an unforgettable ace at the 2016 Masters.

“It’s pretty cool to make a 1, isn’t it?” Lowry said after finishing with a two-under par 68 to end the week on seven-under. “I made one at Pebble [Beach] last year and that’s my first one since.

“It’s a good start to my round. Unfortunately I didn’t kick on from there, but yeah, it’s pretty cool. Always nice. I’m pretty happy.”

Describing his shot into the second, Lowry said: “It was 170 and it was into a little draught. It was early in the morning, and it was like a perfect sort of 75 7-iron. I have a little cut 75 7-iron that I hit, and it just came out perfect, nice high cut.

“I said to Darren [Reynolds, caddy], actually I was thinking it’s quite similar to the pin position at 6 at Augusta. I was thinking this is the type of shot you need to hit in there.

“I had a good visual for it and I just hit a beautiful shot. Yeah, it was good.”

Overall, Lowry declared himself “pretty happy” with his week’s work on a course which he said “doesn’t suit my game at all”. With the Masters now less than a fortnight away, he heads to Augusta National for two days of practice before a weekend off to fine-tune his preparations at home.

“I think I got a lot of good out of it, so I’m happy.”

He added: “[I] obviously wanted to play a tournament and I come off the back of two missed cuts. Obviously I got off to a great start this season and then at Bay Hill, Players, I wasn’t very good.

“I think what happened at Cognizant was kind of – might have let that dwell over me for a bit longer than I should have.

“It was nice to come out here and play four rounds and hit some really good shots. I felt like I
drove the ball well this week.

“Like, you just have to look at the top of the leaderboard: it’s all 185 [mph], 190 ball speed guys. This golf course is for them but I’m pretty happy.”
