DIT, UCC book Sigerson Cup semi-finals spots

DIT had nine points to spare against NUI Maynooth at Bray Emmets.

Dublin Institute of Technology  2-15

Nui Maynooth 0-12

STAR-STUDDED Dublin Institute of Technology cruised into the semi-finals of the Sigerson Cup this afternoon.

DIT had nine points to spare against dogged NUI Maynooth at Bray Emmets and players of the calibre of Kerry’s Darran O’Sullivan and Mayo powerhouse Aidan O’Shea will now sample finals weekend for the first time.

A strong final 10 minutes saw DIT make it through to the prestigious weekend at Athlone IT and they now await the winners of tomorrow’s quarter-final between holders Dublin City University and rivals University College Dublin. For last year’s beaten finalists NUI Maynooth, this was a disappointing end to the campaign but DIT had too much class in blustery conditions.

Mayo corner forward Jason Doherty led the way in the scoring stakes for the winners with a haul of 0-8, split evenly between play and placed balls. Eight different players were on target from play for DIT and this was in stark contrast to NUI Maynooth, who managed just 0-4 from play during the entire game.

But Maynooth hung in there until the closing stages and midway through the second half, they trailed by just a single point. DIT had led by 1-5 to 0-6 at half-time, with Dublin’s Nicky Devereaux bursting forward for a fine goal in the 20th minute, but Maynooth provided dogged resistance.

DIT opened the second half with the aid of the breeze but they only pulled away towards the finish, with Offaly’s Bernard Allen coming off the bench to score a 54th minute goal and put the end result beyond any doubt.
