The Morning Score: Tuesday

Get that coffee poured and get stuck into our round-up of the morning’s sports news. It has been a busy one already.

1. #RWC2011 Ireland have confirmed that Munster hooker Mike Sherry will join up with the Irish squad in New Zealand later this week as concerns about Rory Best’s fitness persist.

The Ulster man sprained the AC joint in his right shoulder during Sunday’s win over Italy in Dunedin, making him a major doubt for the quarter-final against Wales.

Under competition rules, Sherry will not be able to train with the squad unless Best is officially ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.

2. #GALWAY GAA Alan Mulholland has been appointed as Galway senior football manager on a three-year term, the county board confirmed last night.

The Salthill-Knocknacarra man, who replaces Tomás Ó Flathartha at the helm, becomes the fourth person to take charge of the Tribe’s footballers in as many years.

3. #BAKU Seven Irish fighters will be in action at the AIBA World Amateur Boxing Championships in Baku today, with six of them fighting to secure qualification for the London 2012 Olympics as well as a place in the tournament’s quarter-finals.

Joe Ward is first up for the Irish. He faces Ehsan Rouzbahani of Iran in the heavyweight division at around 10am Irish time.

4. #FAI CUP First Division leaders Shelbourne can look forward to a FAI Cup semi-final after they weathered a late comeback by Limerick to win 4-3 in Tolka Park last night.

Their semi-final opponents, St Patrick’s Athletic, were also in action last night as their faltering league challenge was dealt a fatal blow when they were beaten 2-1 by UCD.

5. #TUILAGI The England rugby camp has once again found itself embroiled in controversy after centre Manu Tuilagi was fined £4,800 for wearing a sponsored gumshield during the win against Georgia.

A team spokesman brushed off the incident last night, describing it as a “genuine error”.
