The Surf Report: Dublin to fake it 'til it makes it this weekend

It’s not often the capital is the surfing destination of the weekend – but that’s the case this week.

SURFS UP DUBLIN! Its not often you get to say that.

However this weekend Dublin will play host to the inaugural 53 Degrees North Open Surf Championships in association with O’Neill at the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre.

“How?” I hear you ask.

Well the event will be held on an artificial wave machine called the Flow Rider. The Flow Rider is the only mobile wave machine of its type in Europe and will produce a constant never-ending wave for top surfers from Ireland and abroad to compete on.

But its not just the pros that will be getting all the fun, the general public are being invited to use the machine too. For €10 you will be given 30 minutes on the machine to show off your rad skills, and this includes instruction and the hire of a board and suit.

Good waves everyone…

Weather Overview

Also going ahead this weekend are the Sea Sessions in Bundoran. All eyes will be on the north-west as the leading Irish surfers compete in the Quicksilver Expression Sessions and other events. And they will have to be at the top of their game as swells will be running fairly low and from the wrong direction. Although they will be helped along by offshore winds hopefully giving some shape to the waves. Good luck to all.

The north – Nothing until Sunday.

Co Donegal/Sligo – The Sea Session organisers will be hoping that the south-west swells will wrap around the north-west corner of the country – but I wouldn’t hold by breath. Sunday will again be the best as the weather fronts slowly move through and the winds stay offshore but getting breezier throughout the day.

Co Clare – Six inches today but building all weekend. Wind will be a problem as it gusts up to a possible 50kph.

Dingle Peninsula – Looking solid for the weekend with Brandon Bay being the best option if the swell does wrap in. Winds stay southerly (but strong) so Dumps will be offshore.

Cork and the south – Similar to Dingle, Cork will be experiencing plenty of swell with plenty of wind. However, Cork does not have the luxury of a North coast so it will be cross/onshore all weekend.

Lets face it lads, the best surf is going to be in Dublin!
