The Surf Report: perfect conditions for the learners amongst us

There’s plenty of ankle-biting waves for those novices ready to hit the shores this weekend.

THE 2011 QUIKSILVER ISA World Junior Surfing Championships are to be held at Punta Hermosa, Peru from the 21 to 29 May.

A team of 11 junior surfers shall be representing Ireland at the event – that’s if they can find the funds to get there that is.

Conor Maguire, Cian Cagney and Cian Logue along with new cap Louis Martin will be charging in the U-18s.

The girls will be represented by Emer McHugh, Meadb McCloskey and Aideen Hillery, who shall all be making their debuts in green.

The U-16s will be headed by Gearoid McDaid with three more new bloods in Donough Cronin, David Gaynor and Neil Murphy rounding out the rest of the squad. The team will compete against over 40 different nations from all over the world.

In the current economic climate the team has been unable to secure a main sponsor to cover their costs in order to compete at the event. Despite a pledge from Irish surf brand Emerald Surfwear they find themselves with a €1500 deficit to be made. They are now appealing for donations of ANY SIZE via a PayPal site to help them in their quest to show the world what Irish surfers can do.

Good waves everyone…

Weather Overview

So it’s been pretty dreadful for over a week now. That big low has dominated our weather, generating strong cross-shore winds for most of us across the country. The good news is that the low has started to move on north.

Bad news is that it will be replaced with a large anti-cyclone continuing the run of bad wind. There will still be swell there so it’ll be the early morning birds that will catch the worms/waves, before the winds get too high.

The north – Perfect learner conditions for the weekend. Decent weather and one-foot ankle biters.

Co Donegal/Sligo – Positioned to get the best from the swell but with cross/onshore winds, so don’t expect too much shape to your wave. Two to three foot today and messy, and should continue as such all weekend.

Co Clare – 2ft cross shore slop.

Dingle Peninsula – West-northwest winds are still knocking the peaks off the swell and making the place feel very cold.

Cork & the south – Very little going on, but there is a chance of some cross-off wind Saturday morning.

Do not enter the water alone or without adequate equipment and do not enter surf that is too large for your abilities.
