Tottenham 0-0 Lazio (FT)

Hello, and welcome to our liveblog of Tottenham versus Lazio.

Here are the teams:

Tottenham: Lloris, Walker, Caulker, Vertonghen, Naughton, Sandro, Dembele, Lennon, Dempsey, Bale, Defoe. Subs: Cudicini, Huddlestone, Gallas, Dawson, Sigurdsson, Townsend, Mason.

Lazio: Marchetti, Lulic, Dias, Biava, Cavanda, Ledesma, Onazi, Gonzalez, Hernanes, Mauri, Klose. Subs: Bizzarri, Ciani, Scaloni, Ederson, Zarate, Kozak, Floccari.

And we’re underway…

As you’ll have noticed, it’s a pretty strong Tottenham side. Of the team from their win over Reading at the weekend, only Brad Friedel, William Gallas and Gylfi Sigurðsson aren’t playing.

It’s been quite an uneventful opening few minutes, with plenty of slick passing, but little in the way of goalmouth action.

If Lazio didn’t know already, they are quickly learning that Spurs are far from your typical British football team, given that they look to pass the ball as much as possible.

Still very stop-start at the moment.

Tottenham’s hesitant start to this game is perhaps partially down to their underwhelming start to the season, though the win on Sunday should have given them a confidence boost.

Ass I type, there is a moment of uncertainty in Spurs’ defence, as the ball is played dangerously across their box, though no Lazio attacker is on hand to meet it.

They’re referring to Klose by the way.

17 minutes gone and still not a clear-cut chance in sight.

This game consequently seems to be the antithesis our earlier liveblog.

Finally a chance, as Aaron Lennon finds himself in a good position inside the Lazio box, but he dwells on the ball, before crossing to Bale, who heads it just over.

Lazio appear content to sit back and let Tottenham come at them at the moment.

Tottenham have a goal ruled out for offside, after the Lazio defence push out as Bale crosses for Dempsey to head home.

By the looks of replays, Dempsey timed his run to perfection, and so Spurs should be a goal up.

Meanwhile, Setanta commentator/resident psychiatrist Paul Dempsey reckons Aaron Lennon has a “confidence problem” after he overruns the ball for the second time tonight.

Tottenham are definitely the more dominant side right now, as Lennon wins a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area.

But not for the first time tonight, a set piece is wasted, as Dempsey blasts the ball straight into the wall.

A rare Lazio attack results in Klose’s shot deflecting wide off Vertonghen and the corner is then cleared comfortably.

The Italians have offered minimal attacking threat thus far.

It’s all very sedate at White Hart Lane, until all of a sudden, Gonzalez rattles the Spurs crossbar with a volley, after Vertonghen had headed the ball into his path.

Lazio are coming more into the game as we approach half-time.

HALF-TIME: Tottenham 0-0 Lazio

The referee blew up 15 seconds early, interestingly. Perhaps he was overcome with boredom.

So it’s half-time in what hasn’t been the most entertaining of games in truth.

Tottenham had more of the play for the majority of the first 45 minutes without threatening the Lazio goal on a regular basis, though they will feel somewhat aggrieved at having a perfectly legitimate Clint Dempsey goal ruled out.

Lazio have defended well, but have been disappointingly unambitious in attack, though a stunning Rodriguez strike almost gave them a lead they would have scarcely deserved, when he hit the crossbar from distance just before the break.

The second half is underway…

UEFA president Michel Platini is in the stands for tonight’s match (Nick Potts/PA Wire/Press Association Images).

Somehow Tottenham fail to score as the ball drifts past the goalkeeper and seems to fall perfectly for Dempsey, but a goalmouth scramble ensues and Lazio clear it away desperately.

I was about to be point out what an effective job Lazio have done in closing down the Spurs attackers whenever the ball was in the final third, until that incident of distinctly uncertain defending occurred.

Despite creating that last chance, Jermain Defoe has been fairly anonymous tonight.

The hosts don’t have an out-and-out striker on the bench though, so he’s unlikely to be replaced anytime soon.

Another goal for Tottenham has been ruled out.

Gareth Bale made a typical marauding run down the left and supplied Defoe to finish into an empty net, but Bale is adjudged to have timed his initial run early and is deemed to be offside.

This time, fortunately from the officials’ viewpoint, it’s the correct decision.

Sandro heads a gilt-edged chance wide, with a free header from a Bale free-kick.

The hosts will at least be relieved that they managed a decent delivery from a set piece for once in this game.

A valid point…

It’s a bit of a joke at the moment, as a spectator fails to return the ball.

Cue: a two-minute wait for a new ball.

From the eventual ensuing corner, Caulker heads home, but the referee rules out a Totterham goal for the third time tonight.

Judging by the replays, the Spurs man barely touched his opponent.

“I’m not saying the referee’s incompetent but…” says a bemused Paul Dempsey.

Dempsey’s Spurs debut is over, as he’s taken off for Sigurdsson.

It hasn’t been the most productive of games for the American.

This game seems destined to end 0-0, as Lazio continue to frustrate Spurs.

Lennon is off for Townsend, as Tottenham make one last throw of the dice.

There’s been no real zip to Tottenham’s passing tonight – their build-up play has predominantly been quite lugubrious.

In fairness to AVB’s men, their opponents have been highly disciplined in defence and have stopped them from playing for the most part.

FULL-TIME: TOTTENHAM 0-0 LAZIO

So it ends 0-0 in what won’t be remembered as one of the better games to watch this season.

Aside from once notable exception in the first-half when Gonzalez hit the bar with a rocket of a shot, Lazio offered no attacking threat. They did, however, do well to break up Spurs’ rhythm and gave a thoroughly assured defensive display for the most part.

Tottenham passed the ball nicely at times, but never really attacked with enough speed to trouble Lazio unduly.

In saying that, Spurs fans will point to two goals that, on another day, might not have been ruled out.
