Vettel on pole in Hungary

The Red Bull driver claimed top spot on the grid after a frantic final few minutes of action in qualifying.

World Champion Sebastian Vettel will start on pole position for Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix, putting Red Bull back in charge in the battle for Championship points.

The German put in a late lap of 1:19.815 to beat McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button into second and third, coming from behind in the final seconds to claim top spot.

Until the late effort, pole had looked to be on the way to Hamilton – who will have been disappointed not to have improved his best time on his second and final run – but it’s now firmly advantage Vettel ahead of the main event.

Button will start third – having been just four hundredths of a second slower than his colleague – while Felipe Massa out-qualified Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso for the first time this season to take fourth ahead of the Spaniard.

Red Bull’s second driver, Mark Webber, never really looked capable of mounting a challenge during the final segment of the session and could only managed sixth. Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil, Michael Schumacher and Sergio Perez completed the top ten.
