What Katie did: Taylor progresses to the last-16 in China

The reigning world champion coasted through her first test at the AIBA World Boxing Championships this morning.

KATIE TAYLOR MUST come through four more bouts to earn a place at London 2012 after winning her last-32 clash this morning.

Taking on Tunisia’s Rim Jouini at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in China, the Bray fighter came away with a 19-6 victory over the 2010 bronze medallist with relative comfort.

Taylor, who is boxing as a lightweight in her bid to pick up a fourth consecutive world title and with it qualification for this year’s Olympics, is down to box Saida Khassenova of Kazakhstan in the last-16 tomorrow.

“Our attack was spot on as usual,” Katie said on RTE Radio. “Thankfully I got a few points up early then took it easy from there. It’s nice to get the first one out of the way.

“It was a tough one to start with,” added her father and coach Peter.

She was a little bit anxious but started well enough. She gave the girl a count in the first and the second and knew she was well ahead in the third so just coasted through.

“Her opponent tomorrow is a pretty awkward girl. We will look at the videos tonight and  hopefully get our tactics right.

“We’re taking each bout one at a time and looking at each one as a final.”
