'You never picked him in the summer!' Carra hits back after Neville praises Stones

The €56 million defender made his competitive debut for Man City at the weekend.

GARY NEVILLE MADE his return to Monday Night Football this evening, and it didn’t take long for Jamie Carragher to wind up the former Man United defender.

John Stones’ competitive debut for Man City at the weekend was discussed and Neville launched an impassioned defence of the youngster, arguing that people should embrace the 22-year-old for his talent on the ball rather than lambasting him for the mistakes he sometimes makes.

Carragher, however, responded: “You never picked him in the summer,” alluding to Neville’s role as part of the England coaching staff and the fact that Stones got no game time for his country during their disappointing Euro 2016 campaign.

Neville replied by suggesting that “picking him and discouraging him are different things”.

It was not the only sly dig Carragher aimed at the returning Neville this evening.

When the Sky Sports cameras panned to a shot of new England coach Sam Allardyce sitting in the stands ahead of tonight’s Chelsea-West Ham game, Carragher said: “That used to be your job, didn’t it?”

“You’re a bad man,” Neville replied.
