growing anger

60% of GAA club players have considered walking away from the sport due to frustration over fixtures

The latest survey results indicate growing frustration and militancy within CPA ranks.

THE CLUB PLAYERS Association has revealed what it’s described as a ‘watershed statistic’ for the GAA, with a recent study indicating that 60% of those surveyed have considered walking away ‘due to a lack of a definitive fixture calendar.’

The CPA asked respondents four key questions, and here are the results received:

Q1: As a club player/member are you willing to wait until 2020 for change to happen to the current club fixture situation?

3,231 replied to this question, with 2,962 (91.67%) answering ‘no’, while the remaining 369 (8.33%) answered ‘yes’.

Q2: Do you think that club fixtures should be on the agenda at the forthcoming Special Congress in September?

Yes: 3,192 (98.79%)
No: 39 (1.21%)

Q3: Do you believe the CPA should escalate its response to demonstrate to the GAA that the club player is dissatisfied with their response to the unfairness of the system to the plight of the Club Player?

Yes: 3,071 (95.43%)
No: 147 (4.57%)

Q4: Have you ever considered walking away from the game because of the lack of a definitive fixture calendar at club level?

Yes: 1,924 (59.57%)
No: 1,306 (40.43%)

The overwhelming ‘yes’ response to question 3 also indicates a growing militancy within CPA ranks, after secretary Declan Brennan warned earlier this year that strike action wouldn’t be ruled out in the pursuit of the body’s goals.
