DANIEL AGGER HAS today announced his decision to retire from football.
The Danish defender, who has been plagued by injury problems, calls time on his career at the age of just 31.
Agger confirmed his decision via Twitter: “Thank you for your support. A great experience. It’s sad, but it is the right decision to stop. I’m proud of my career.”
After beginning his professional career with Brondby, Agger was signed by Liverpool in January 2006 and went on to become a fan-favourite at Anfield.
Over the course of an eight-year spell with the Premier League club, Agger made 232 appearances and won the League Cup in 2012, as well as playing in the 2007 Champions League final defeat to AC Milan.
Agger returned to Brondby for two seasons in 2014 and played his final game against Sönderjyske on 29 May, receiving a standing ovation from supporters when he was substituted late in the game.
At international level, Agger won 75 caps — most of them as captain — and played for Denmark at the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championships.
