AMERICAN MIDDLE-DISTANCE runner David Torrence, who competed for Peru at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has been found dead in Arizona at the age of 31.
According to local media reports, the athlete was found at the bottom of a swimming pool at 7.30am on Monday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Detectives learned that there were no obvious signs of foul play,” a police statement said.
A native of California, Torrence won silver for the USA at the World Relay Championships in 2014 and finished second at the Pan American Games in 2015.
He switched nationality to Peru last year and ran for his mother’s home country at the Rio Olympics, finishing 15th in the 5000 metres.
Torrence competed as recently as 10 August at the World Championships in London and police say he was in Arizona on a training camp.
