Jon Walters to switch Premier League clubs as Stoke accept bid worth £3m

Lancashire clubs are quickly developing a monopoly on Ireland internationals.

IRELAND FRONT MAN Jon Walters is closing in on a move away from Stoke City, but will remain in the Premier League.

John Percy of the Daily Telegraph reported this afternoon that Burnley have agreed a deal worth up to £3m to secure the 33-year-old’s services, and numerous British outlets have since followed suit.

Walters will sort personal terms and undergo a medical at the Lancashire club in the next 48 hours, as per Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett.

Should all go to plan, he’ll join a sizeable Irish contingent at Burnley, with Kevin Long, Stephen Ward, Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady already part of Sean Dyche’s first-team squad.

The Liverpool-born Irish forward arrived at Stoke from Ipswich in 2010, setting the Potters back £2.75. He’s since scored 62 goals in 271 appearances, and established himself as a fan favourite in the Potteries.

Walters has scored more Premier League goals for Stoke than any other player, per Opta, and has netted versus Liverpool in five of the last six seasons, with seven goals in total versus the Reds. Incidentally, he’s an Everton fan.

Liverpool visit Turf Moor on New Year’s Day 2018.
