As it happened: England v Norway, World Cup quarter-final

England faced Norway for a place in the last four.

England 2-1 Norway

Hello, and welcome to tonight’s liveblog.

England are favourites tonight, but Thomas Tuchel’s side have not found it easy in the knockout stages.

A 75th-minute Harry Kane equaliser was needed to inspire a comeback against DR Congo.

And in the round of 16, they survived playing most of the second half with 10 men to edge co-hosts Mexico.

Norway will hardly be pushovers either.

They earned a hard-fought late 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast in the round of 32 before an impressive victory by the same scoreline against Brazil.

With seven goals so far, Erling Haaland is the undisputed star, but Ståle Solbakken’s side have proved with their performances so far that they are far from a one-man team.

Who do you think will go through to the semi-finals?

We’re underway…

2 mins: Anderson plays a great cross-field pass to Madueke.

The Arsenal star creates space with his pace down the right, but then hits his cross straight out of play.

5 mins: Sorloth tries to play Haaland through on goal, but Stones intercepts.

The Atlético Madrid star will be disappointed he couldn’t produce a better pass there at the key moment.

11 mins: It’s been a cagey opening.

Neither side has created much, though most of the play has been in Norway’s half.

15 mins: Norway are struggling to keep hold of the ball when they get it.

Ståle Solbakken’s side seem content to sit back and play on the counter-attack.

An interesting pre-match stat from Opta…

19 mins: After a long build-up, Anderson eventually crosses.

It appears to take a deflection off Bellingham and goes harmlessly out of play.

22 mins: Haaland has barely had a kick so far.

The Man City star has been isolated up front, with the rest of the Norway team spending most of the game defending deep.

23 mins: Madueke fires a low cross into the box.

O’Reilly gets a faint touch but his effort drifts wide.

The hydration break is now taking place.

England’s possession has gone up to 73%.

28 mins: Ajer bumps into Bellingham on the edge of the area, and the referee awards a free kick in England’s favour.

Decent chance for England.

29 mins: It’s a disappointing effort from Kane.

The Bayern star blasts his free kick from the edge of the area well over.

NORWAY 1-0 ENGLAND (Schjelderup 36)

Against the run of play, Norway take the lead.

Schjelderup gets away from Konsa, and he delivers what looks like an attempted cross, but it creeps into the net as Pickford fails to claim it.

Kane claimed he was fouled in the build-up, but the officials ignore England’s protests.

39 mins: Norway go close to a second.

Sorloth fires narrowly over.

Moments later, Odegaard’s low shot is saved by Pickford.

All of a sudden, Norway are very much in the ascendancy, having spent most of the half on the backfoot.

41 mins: Stones looks nervy with Haaland chasing him down.

He runs the ball straight out of play.

Here’s a look at the opening goal…

44 mins: Norway counter through Sorloth.

He has a chance to pass to Haaland, but chooses to take it on himself, and O’Reilly gets a block on his shot.

There will be four minutes of stoppage time.

NORWAY 1-1 ENGLAND (BELLINGHAM 46)

Gordon crosses low for Bellingham.

The Real Madrid star escapes the attentions of a couple of defenders and fires low into the corner of the net.

Kane has the ball in the net after being played through by Bellingham.

But it’s correctly ruled out for a marginal offside.

HALF-TIME: ENGLAND 1-1 NORWAY

Here’s a look at the England equaliser…

It’s been a fascinating first half.

England dominated possession and territory for most of it, but struggled to create chances against a disciplined Norway defence.

Ståle Solbakken’s side made the most of an excellent spell after the break to take the lead.

But on one of the few occasions where Norway allowed their opponents some space in the final third, England took full advantage, with Bellingham’s brilliant finish.

England make two attacking changes at the break.

Rice and Madueke are off.

Saka and Eze come on.

The second half has begun…

47 mins: Berge brings Kane down about 30 yards from goal.

Another decent position for England.

48 mins: Eze’s shot deflects off Gordon and goes harmlessly for a goal kick.

England have been below par from set pieces so far.

52 mins: The game is becoming more open in the second half.

As I type, Pickford touches Sorloth’s cross behind for a corner.

53 mins: Haaland’s header is tipped behind by Pickford.

This is a good spell for Norway.

NORWAY 2-1 ENGLAND (Heggem 55)

ENGLAND 1-1 NORWAY – GOAL RULED OUT!

Heggem slots it home after Pickford makes an initial save.

But Haaland is penalised in the build-up for a push on Anderson.

59 mins: Ryerson is down for Norway.

It looks like he’ll have to come off, and that’ll be a blow, as he’s one of their better players.

60 mins: The injured Ryerson goes off and he is replaced by Aursnes.

62 mins: Norway have had the better of the early stages of the second half.

The subs seem to have hampered England.

They’re missing Rice, while Bellingham has been forced into a more withdrawn role.

Here’s a look at Norway’s disallowed goal…

67 mins: This game remains finely balanced.

Norway have dropped into a more defensive shape again but look dangerous on the counter.

68 mins: Two changes for Norway.

Sorloth and Schjelderup are off.

Bobb and Nusa come on.

The water break is now happening.

71 mins: England also make a change.

Reece James replaces Anthony Gordon, which presumably means Eze will play on the left.

England had started to look a bit vulnerable in central midfield without Rice.

74 mins: Bobb dribbles in the area, but loses control of it and Pickford gathers.

Moments later, Konsa tackles Nusa, and it goes out for a corner.

76 mins: An Ajer header from a corner hits off the crossbar.

Berge tries to get to the rebound but it’s cleared.

Big let-off for England.

77 mins: Saka delivers a dangerous inswinging cross, but it eludes everyone.

Anderson can’t quite get to it at the far post.

81 mins: Nusa’s cross is headed away by O’Reilly.

Norway are on the front foot at the moment.

82 mins: Nusa’s cross deflects off Saka for a corner.

More Norwegian pressure.

85 mins: After a long build-up, Nusa shoots, but it’s straight at Pickford.

Norway are looking more likely to score right now.

86 mins: England make another change.

Spence is on for O’Reilly.

87 mins: Great play from Saka to beat his man and deliver a low cross.

But Aursnes does really well to get himself in the right position and clear it.

89 mins: Morgan Rogers is on in place of Konsa.

And for Norway, Pedersen replaces Møller Wolfe.

90 + 1 mins: Heart-in-mouth moment for Norway.

Spence charges down Nyland’s kick, but it deflects out for a goal kick.

There will be seven minutes of stoppage time, two of which have already been played.

90 + 3 mins: Heggem has gone down with cramp.

Having been second best for most of this half, England are finishing strongly.

90 + 5 mins: Stones whips in a cross, but Bellingham can’t direct his header on target.

The tension is palpable as extra time beckons.

FULL-TIME: ENGLAND 1-1 NORWAY – EXTRA-TIME TO BE PLAYED!

Both teams look exhausted by the end of the second half.

You get the impression a mistake or a moment of magic could settle the match.

There will probably be more space in extra time, given how tired both sets of players are.

Norway are making another change.

Heggem is off and Østigård comes on.

Extra time has begun…

England are starting on the front foot and have a corner.

ENGLAND 2-1 NORWAY (BELLINGHAM 93)

He’s done it again.

Rogers’ shot is parried away, and Bellingham reacts quickest to slot home the rebound.

The goalkeeper should have done better there.

Here’s a look at what could be the winning goal…

99 mins: Norway have had a long spell of possession.

But at the moment, they’re struggling to break England down.

PENALTY TO ENGLAND!

Spence goes down under a challenge from Bobb.

The referee points to the spot, but it’s going to be checked.

DECISION REVERSED! NO PENALTY FOR ENGLAND!

The referee concluded Spence put his leg across Bobb, and so it will be a free out for Norway.

Game on!

104 mins: Space opens up briefly for Nusa.

But Guehi does really well to get a block in.

105 mins: As you would expect, Norway are dominating possession now.

So far, though, they can’t find a way past England’s stubborn defence.

There will be three minutes of stoppage time.

105 + 3 mins: Bellingham blazes over a tired shot from distance.

That will probably be that for the first half.

HALF-TIME: ENGLAND 2-1 NORWAY

A remarkable fact that has just occurred to me.

After 105 minutes of football, not a single yellow card has been shown.

Even if that’s partially a reflection of the lenient officiating at this World Cup, the game has been played in a great spirit.

Big call by the Norway coach.

Haaland is off.

And Strand Larsen has come on.

The Man City star had looked very lethargic – even by his standards – for that first half of extra time.

106 mins: Nusa fires in a dangerous low cross that takes a deflection and is eventually cleared.

Dan Burn is about to come on for England.

Bobb plays through Berg.

But the midfielder’s shot from the edge of the area goes a few inches over the bar.

110 mins: Nyland makes three consecutive saves from Saka (twice) and Spence.

Two of those chances came from the goalkeeper giving the ball away rashly.

111 mins: Bellingham is off for England.

And Burn is on.

114 mins: A corner falls to Bobb, but he blazes it over from the edge of the area.

The Fulham star will feel he should have done better there.

117 mins: Norway have a free kick in a decent position.

But Odegaard’s delivery is parried away by Pickford.

This is reminiscent of the end of the Mexico game.

119 mins: England have done well to slow the game down in recent minutes.

Norway look very frustrated.

There will be two minutes of stoppage time.

It looks like England will see it out, as they’re not under serious pressure.

FULL-TIME: ENGLAND 2-1 NORWAY

Well, that’s that.

England probably just about deserved it.

Norway will rue not capitalising on their dominant spell in the second half, and were somewhat unlucky to have a goal ruled out.

England and Jude Bellingham, in particular, dug deep to grind out another hard-fought win.

Ståle Solbakken’s side produced a decent performance and arguably shaded it over 90 minutes, but ultimately ran out of gas in extra time and struggled to create many big chances, similar to Mexico in the round of 16.
