MAYO FORWARD ALAN Freeman has departed the county’s senior panel due to work commitments.
The development was reported last night by The Mayo News with Freeman having informed manager Stephen Rochford last Sunday after Mayo had claimed victory over Kerry in Austin Stack Park the night before.
Freeman was named to start in that game in Tralee but was replaced before throw-in by Andy Moran and was not introduced as a substitute during the match.
The Aghamore club man started the previous Saturday in Mayo’s league opener against Monaghan in Castlebar, scoring a point during Mayo’s 1-11 to 0-12 defeat.
Freeman, who turns 28 today, lives and works in Dublin for Veolia.
Last year Freeman was in and out of the Mayo side during their championship campaign.
He came on as a substitute in the Connacht semi-final loss to Galway in June, before then starting in Mayo’s opening qualifier against Fermanagh in July.
Freeman scored Mayo’s opening goal in that match as they went on to claim a 2-14 to 1-12 victory but he lost his starting place thereafter.
Freeman did come on as a substitute in the qualifiers against Kildare and Westmeath but saw no game time in the remainder of the All-Ireland series. He was named on the bench for the All-Ireland final clashes with Dublin.
During his senior career with Mayo, Freeman made 30 championship appearances since his debut in 2010 in the Connacht quarter-final loss to Sligo.
He struck 1-4 that night in Markievicz Park and bagged 0-5 when Mayo exited the championship that year against Longford, a game that proved to be John O’Mahony’s last in charge.
One of Freeman’s finest games came in the 2013 All-Ireland semi-final win over Tyrone. He scored 1-4 in that game – including a goal from a penalty in front of Hill 16 – as he deputised for the injured Cillian O’Connor, by assuming placed ball responsibilties.
Freeman came on as a substitute in the 2012 All-Ireland final loss to Donegal while he started the 2013 All-Ireland final defeat against Dublin. In total Freeman scored 6-28 for his county in championship.
