IT WAS DEEP in stoppage time in Mallow yesterday when Clonmel Commercials scored a famous goal to clinch AIB Munster senior club football glory.

Michael Quinlivan was the scorer, a man well-used to holding his nerve in high-pressure situations.

Quinlivan netted an ice-cool penalty at the Hill 16 end when Tipp claimed All-Ireland minor glory against Dublin in 2011.

And he’s been a tower of strength for Commercials in their march to provincial glory.

Nemo were caught by a long ball and Quinlivan’s clinical finish after trying to wind the clock down at the other end of the field.

And Quinlivan told RTÉ Radio at full-time: “I don’t think it gets much better than this, does it?

“The way we won it, how we won it, we looked absolutely dead and buried really but my God, we probably did it the hard way. It’s a bit sweeter looking back now.

“When Nemo Rangers are going across and over and back the field like Barcelona there with a minute to go, you think they’re just playing down the clock. Even we get a kick out and there’s a minute left, 999 out of 1000 they’re going to see it out.”

But Commercials gained possession, hoofed in a long one and Quinlivan was on hand to bag a goal that’s surely being replayed hundreds of times in Clonmel hostelries this afternoon.
