ELEVEN RUSSIAN BOXERS have been declared eligible to compete at Rio 2016 by the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) review panel, including a pair of reigning world champions.
The IOC opted against a blanket ban on Russian athletes at the Games following revelations of state-sponsored doping and the means of covering it up made in two independent reports commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Instead, the IOC established a three-person review panel to rule on cases put forward from individual sport federations, with AIBA’s 11 recommended athletes granted eligibility.
Among them are heavyweight Evgeny Tishchenko and light welterweight Vitaly Dunaytsev, gold medal winners at the AIBA World Championships in Doha last October.
Misha Aloyan and Andrey Zamkoyov, both of whom won bronze at London 2012, will also feature in the competition.
