WATERFORD SENIOR SHANE Bennett was the scoring star with a brilliant haul of 3-7 as Limerick IT cruised past Trinity College in their opening game in the 2017 Fitzgibbon Cup today.
The 4-21 to 0-7 victory on home soil ensured LIT powered to a strong start in Group C of the colleges hurling competition.
Bennett fired a first-half hat-trick of goals with Limerick hurler David Dempsey grabbing their other goal as LIT were in front 4-8 to 0-4 at the interval.
LIT were far too strong for their opponents as they fielded a strong team including Limerick’s Diarmaid Byrnes and Barry O’Connell along with the Clare trio of David Reidy, Peter Duggan and Jamie Shanahan.
Thy ran out 26-point winner with Bennett’s accuracy in front of goal proving vital. Six of his points came from frees while he also found the net from a penalty for one of his goals.
Dublin duo Cian O’Sullivan and Fionn Ó Riain-Broin were in the Trinity College ranks with freetaker O’Sullivan firing six of their team’s seven points.
