We now know who the new Mayo manager will be after only one nominee was put forward

Stephen Rochford will hold discussions with the county board in the coming weeks.

THE FRONT-RUNNER in the race to become the Mayo football manager has emerged as the only candidate for the position.

Stephen Rochford’s name went into the hat on Thursday and it’s now been announced the 37-year-old was the only nominee put forward to fill the vacancy left by Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly.

The county board had set 1 November as the deadline for nominations.

In a statement released this evening, Mayo county chiefs confirmed the inevitable and say formal discussions between both parties will take place over the coming weeks.

“The deadline for receipt of nominations for the position of Mayo Senior Football Team Manager has now passed,” it read.

“At this stage there is just the nomination of one candidate for the position. Both the Crossmolina Deel Rovers and Ballinrobe G.A.A. Clubs have submitted a nomination, along with a letter indicating acceptance of nomination, for Stephen Rochford to the role.

“The nominated candidate will meet with bord [sic] officials over the coming weeks where formal discussions will take place and also confirmation of backroom team members.”

Rochford is the current manager of Galway, Connacht and AIB All-Ireland senior football champions Corofin.

James Horan was linked with a return to the Mayo post he vacated in 2014 but he confirmed this week that he will not be coming back.

Rochford was nominated by two clubs, including his native Crossmolina, with whom he won an All-Ireland senior club medal during his playing days.

Holmes and Connelly resigned from their positions, just one year into a three-year term last month, after the senior squad had tabled a vote of no confidence in the management duo.
