Limerick rout Antrim while Wexford move to the top of Division 1B

It was a strong second half performance that put Limerick in driving seat.

WITH AN OPENING weekend draw between Limerick and Cork making it likely that promotion from the Allianz National Hurling League Division 1B will come down to scoring difference, the Shannonsiders gave their chances a major boost with a 23-point win over Antrim in the Gaelic Grounds this afternoon.

Though disappointing in the first half, Conor Allis kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home side and ensured they had a five point lead at the break; 0-11 to 0-6.

However, goals from William Hickey, Sean Tobin and David Reidy saw the Treaty County run out comfortable 3-26 to 0-12 winners while Antrim sit at the foot of table with a -24 points difference after two games.

They’re joined in the relegation battle by Offaly who, despite an improved performance from the game with Laois, find themselves with two losses in two games after coming up against an impressive Wexford in New Ross today.

Ian Byrne’s goal inside ten minutes looked to have given the hosts the advantage but Joe Bergin’s close range free and a well-worked Conor Mahon effort saw the Faithful county into a 2-8 to 1-10 half-time lead.

They still had that single score lead with 15 minutes remaining but a fantastic team goal was finished off by Liam Og McGovern and meant Wexford outscored the visitors by 1-9 to 0-5 in the second period to move to the top of Division 1B on four points.

Final score in New Ross, Wexford 2-19, Offaly 2-13.
