Olympic hero Murphy to miss World Championships with injury

The silver medallist suffered a knee injury three weeks ago.

IRELAND’S OLYMPIC SILVER medallist, Annalise Murphy, has been forced to withdraw from the Laser Radial World Championships which begin tomorrow.

Murphy picked up a knee injury in becoming the women’s champion at the Moth World Championships in July and it has not healed in time for the event in Medemblik, the Netherlands.

Murphy, who had brought in her training partner from Rio — the New Zealander Sara Winther — to help her three-year build up to Tokyo 2020, said in a statement released on her Facebook page that the Worlds were her main focus this year.

Ireland will still be represented at the Worlds in the shape of Aoife Hopkins from Howth and Aisling Keller of Lough Derg.

Hopkins won the U21 European Championships last month.
