THE IRISH MEN’S national hockey team have suffered a 4-3 defeat to Argentina in the Champions Challenge 1 in Quilmes, as new coach Andrew Meredith took charge for the first time.
Ireland began well, claiming a two-goal lead, with John Jermyn and Timothy Cockram scoring towards the end of the first half.
However, Argentina replied just before the break, with two quick-fire goals from Gonzalo Peillat and Lucas Vila.
A second-half penalty corner from Gonzalo Peillat put the hosts in the driving seat, before another strike from Vila effectively sealed their victory in the dying stages.
Nonetheless, Michael Watt still had time to grab a late consolation for the visitors, leaving the final score at 4-3.
Ireland Coach Andrew Meredith indicated the team had much to improve on, following their below-par display.
“It was a disappointing performance overall with too many inconsistent phases in both halves. There were some real positive phases where we looked good on the ball but there were far too many technical errors to really stamp our authority in any phase.”
Ireland next face Japan in Pool B, who drew 4-4 with South Africa in their opening game of the tournament.
