Disaster strikes twice for Bray as Cork City snatch late win

Wanderers were en-route for a valuable home win when Ian Turner and referee Tom Connolly intervened.

BRAY WANDERERS WERE left crestfallen and much chagrined at the end of their Airticity League defeat to Cork City at the Carlisle Grounds.

Wanderers were leading 1-0, through a Kevin Knight goal, going into the final three minutes of the match before a change of tactics from the visitors and some favourable refereeing saw them snatch all three points.

City, who lost to Dundalk on Friday, looked out of ideas up until midway through the second-half when Danny Morrissey was pushed up front and a 4-4-2 formation adopted. Colin Healy, making bursts from midfield, came closest to and equaliser but Bray were edging closer to a much-needed home win.

Dean Zambra missed a chance to make it 2-0 before Cork threw everything at their hosts. They got a penalty on 87 minutes when referee Tom Connolly adjudged Wanderers defender Dave Webster to have handled in the box. Ian Turner made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Ismahil Akinade, on as a second-half sub for Bray, then appealed vociferously for a penalty as the game ticked into injury time but Connolly was unmoved. The ire of the home fans was stoked further when Turner unleashed a shot that Bray goalkeeper Darren Quigley could only parry. Shane Duggan was there to head home the rebound and make it 2-1.

Saints not so super

Over at Richmond Park, St Patrick’s Athletic missed the opportunity to gain points on leaders Sligo Rovers when they could only muster a draw with Bohemians.

The Saints lead through an Anto Flood goal on 29 minutes but, despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Brendan Clarke, Bohs eventually levelled matters. Dave Mulcahy connected with a Ryan McEvoy corner to make it 1-1.

St Pat’s pressed for the winner but they could not find their way past an inspired Dean Delany in the Bohemians goal. The draw edges the Saints up to 20 points, in third position, while Bohemians remain in ninth, a point behind Shamrock Rovers.
