Cork fall to defeat against relegated Derry but still have league semi-final to get set for

The teams met at Owenbeg this afternoon.

Derry 2-15
Cork 1-11

DERRY GAINED THE consolation of victory over Division 1 table-toppers Cork in the Allianz football league today despite having been already relegated before this clash at Owenbeg.

The Rebels fell to only their second defeat of the spring, the other was away to Donegal, but they still finished top of the table and had a semi-final berth booked before today’s clash. Brian Cuthbert’s side will now prepare to take on Donegal next weekend.

Derry gained their first victory of the spring and Brian McIver’s team received a boost as they switch their focus to the summer’s championship action.

It was Cork who made the early running with the boost of a goal from defender Stephen O’Donoghue and points from the likes of Daniel Goulding and Mark Collins. Cork made seven changes to their team before the game but were still ahead by 1-7 to 0-7 at the break.

Derry took over in the second-half though and restricted Cork to just four points. Captain Mark Lynch placed Enda Lynn for their first goal in the 51st minute and then Lynn finished to the net for their second goal on the hour mark which effectively clinched their win as it pushed them 2-12 to 1-9 ahead.

Scorers for Cork: Stephen O’Donoghue 1-0, Daniel Goulding, Paul Kerrigan 0-3 each, Conor Dorman, John O’Rourke, Mark Collins, John Hayes (0-1f), Colm O’Neill (0-1f) 0-1 each.
