Limerick make it three wins in a row with Munster derby upset of Cork

There was a big upset at Turner’s Cross this evening.

Cork City 2
Limerick 3

THE PREMIER DIVISION’S bottom club Limerick gave their hopes of avoiding relegation a shot in the arm with a vital win over Cork City at Turner’s Cross on Friday.

Paudie O’Connor’s header from a Seán Russell cross on 65 minutes was the crucial goal for the Blues, who led on three occasions and were full value for the victory. City, who are now seven points behind leaders Dundalk will know that there is little room for error ahead of Monday’s trip to face Shamrock Rovers.

Limerick were ahead inside seven minutes, when Vinny Faherty finished well from Lee Lynch’s nice pass. They could have even had a goal before that when Lynch drew a save from Mark McNulty after a slack clearance, and Dean Clarke was unlucky not to make it 2-0 after a pacey burst.

City, after losing captain John Dunleavy to a head injury, drew level through his replacement Ross Gaynor when his low cross travelled all the way to Freddy Hall’s net. While Dan Murray could have put the hosts ahead, he shot over from Karl Sheppard’s cross and then Limerick took the lead once more, Clarke converting the rebound after McNulty saved from former Cork man Ian Turner.

Early in the second half, Faherty almost had a second goal when McNulty’s clearance rebounded off him but went just wide. City sub John O’Flynn equalised just after, bundling home from Colin Healy’s corner but again the lead remained elusive.

Instead, it was Limerick who pressed ahead once more through O’Connor and stout defending saw them hold out for the remainder despite strong City pressing.
