Kilkenny CBS set up all-Kilkenny Croke Cup decider

They ran out five-point winners in the day’s second semi-final.

Kilkenny CBS 2-9

Scoil na Tríonóide Naofa (Doon) 0-10

A first-ever all-Kilkenny final in the post-primary schools ‘A’ championship was sealed by Kilkenny CBS when they followed the St Kieran’s lead by dispatching Limerick opposition in their semi-final.

Two first-half goals by the impressive Andrew Gaffney ended up being the decisive scores as the Doon lads were never able to get back on terms and, despite hanging in there until the very end, always had too much daylight between them and the CBS.

The fact that they only scored two points from play during the entire 60 minutes was never going to help their cause and some missed goal chances, particularly in the opening period, proved costly.

They did take the lead through Dean Coleman in the first minute but Gaffney got the first of his goals within another minute and the second, in the 12 minute, confirmed Kilkenny CBS’s superiority in attack.

Dean Coleman and Colin Ryan always looked a handful up front for the Co Limerick team but Kilkenny’s full-back line grew in confidence as the match went on and they rarely afforded them too much space in the second half.

The likes of Gaffney, Luke Scanlon, Robbie Buckley and JP Treacy kept the scoreboard ticking over as the game drew near its end and CBS’s place in the final never looked at real risk.

Scorers for Kilkenny CBS: Andrew Gaffney 2-2 (2F), Robbie Buckley 0-2, JP Treacy 0-2 (1F), Huw Lawlor 0-1, Luke Scanlon 0-1, Matthew McWey 0-1.
