Despite his ‘VAMOS! VAMOS!’ pre-match message, Argentina struggled in the opening quarter, but a try from Joaquin Tuculet in the 20th minute was converted by Nicolas Sanchez to give the Pumas a 10 – 5 lead and from there the floodgates opened and Juan Imhoff quickly doubled up.
Sanchez made both conversions and added two penalties to push Argentina in to a 20 – 5 lead, but to Kurt Morath’s excellent opening score for Tonga, the Pacific islanders added a terrific Soane Tonga’uiha try before the break to leave the half-time score 20 – 13.
