VIDEO: NHL goalkeeper fights dirty with opposite number

Mass brawls are fine in hockey, but you can’t really fight a guy who doesn’t want to fight.

A HUGE LINE brawl broke out between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals on Friday.

But the part that has NHL fans buzzing was the unprovoked attack by Flyers goalie Ray Emery on opposing goalie Braden Holtby.

While goalies squaring off during a line brawl is not uncommon, it was clear that Holtby had no interest in fighting Emery who is an avid boxing fan and has a reputation as a fighter.

However, that didn’t stop Emery who attacked Holtby. The referee tried unsuccessfully to intervene and then escalated matters by waving off other players.

Emery ultimately landed more than a dozen punches, some after Holtby fell to the ice, before other officials were able to come and intervene.

Here’s the video…

Amazing in this day and age that while most sports are concerned with head injuries that hockey lets players knock lumps off each other.

Must be a really shite sport if they need to allow fighting to keep people interested.

While I’m not necessarily condoning that fight, it is what keeps hockey one of the most honest sports out there. Unlike a lot of sports it has stayed a tough game while still continuing with an incredible level of skill. Fights are used for many different reasons… I would advise anyone to watch hockey and understand it before watching a two minute clip, judging it and commenting on the sport as a whole…

I can understand why someone might lash out if they get hit badly or whatever in the run of the game. But that brawl was ridiculous, why would the goalie bother heading down to the other side of the ice? The commentators don’t seem too concerned about it either, disgraceful carry on.

Seems to be an NHL-only issue too, in international hockey fighting is clamped down on much harder than a few minutes in the penalty box.

And it turns out the goalie received no punishment at all from the NHL! http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/flyers/Flyers_goalie_Ray_Emerys_brawl_spurring_NHL_rule_change_110413.html

    What a joke…
