ENGLAND MEET POLAND in the World Cup qualifiers at Wembley this week in a game that has brought back memories of their famous fixture at the same venue 40 years ago.
In 1973, Alf Ramsey’s side were widely expected to emerge victorious in a match they needed to win on their home turf, with match pundit Brian Clough adding to the sense of complacency by continually labelling Poland goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski a “clown”.
However, Tomaszewski was ultimately the unlikely hero, pulling off a string of impressive saves as the Poles earned a shock draw, which resulted in England’s failure to qualify for the 1974 World Cup, costing Ramsey his job in the process.
