TEAM IRELAND CONTINUED their good form at the European Swimming Championships in Glasgow this morning.
17-year-old World junior champion Mona McSharry qualified for tonight’s 100m breaststroke semi-final while Brendan Hyland booked his place in the 200m butterfly semi-final — his heat time of 1:57.55 was just outside his Irish record.
The Tallaght native, who progresses in eighth place, said afterwards: “It’s been a while coming, so I’m happy

“I was aware my heat swims are always a bit iffy but I’m glad to get back out and attack it and see what I can do. It’s my first time making a semi-final, I think I’ll just enjoy the race, not think about times and try and make that final.”
McSharry’s time of 1:08.53 saw her qualify for this evening (5.31pm) in joint 15th of the 16, while Hyland’s semi is at 5.40pm.
Elsewhere, Robbie Powell and Jordan Sloan were in action in the heats of the 100m freestyle, but failed to progress withe times of 50.71 and 50.34 respectively.
Shane Ryan is also in action in the 50m backstroke final tonight.
