Glasgow replace departing Pyrgos with Wallabies scrum-half Frisby

Dave Rennie has bolstered his half-back resources ahead of the 2018/19 season.

GLASGOW WARRIORS HAVE strengthened their scrum-half stocks by signing Wallaby nine Nick Frisby on a two-year deal after long-serving Henry Pyrgos departed for Edinburgh.

25-year-old Frisby has been capped five times by Australia and joins the Guinness Pro14 outfit ahead of the 2018/19 season, subject to obtaining the necessary documentation and passing a medical.

Frisby, who can also play out-half, is a direct replacement at Scotstoun for Pyrgos, whose move to Edinburgh was confirmed yesterday after eight years with the Warriors.

Having spent the majority of his career with the Queensland Reds in Super Rugby, Frisby spent the second half of last season with Top 14 side Bordeaux Begles, where he made nine appearances.

During his time in Australia, Frisby racked up 69 points in 66 matches for the Brisbane Super Rugby franchise, including 11 tries, the first of which came on his debut against the Sharks in 2012.

He made his international debut against England in June 2016 and played further Tests against New Zealand and Wales that year.

Commenting on Frisby’s arrival at Glasgow, head coach Dave Rennie said it is a ‘real bonus’ to have a player of his calibre available all year round.

“With Henry Pyrgos moving on it’s great to replace him with an international half-back,” Rennie said. “Nick has an outstanding skill set, he is quick and has a quality pass and kick. He’s also incredibly versatile, while he’s predominantly a nine the Reds sometimes played him at ten and as a young player he played a lot of fifteen.

“Coaching the Chiefs, when we were playing the Reds we would dedicate time in the week leading up to the game to shutting Nick down because of how dangerous he can be. His running game and ability to create space for others is a real point of difference.

“I’ve spoken to him recently and he’s incredibly competitive, he’s still a young man and we’re really excited to have him here and the fact that he’ll be here all year round is an extra bonus.”

Frisby, who becomes the Warriors’ second summer signing following the acquisition of USA Eagles international David Tameilau, added: “I’m super excited to be joining Glasgow Warriors. I’m looking forward to getting over and ripping into pre-season with the boys.

“I’ve played against Dave Rennie’s sides in Super Rugby and as soon as I heard he and Glasgow were interested it was a no-brainer. His Chiefs sides were always really exciting, and Glasgow are too and I think his style of play will suit my game really well.”
