Seamus Howlin, Aogán O Fearghail and Sean Walsh are vying to replace current President Liam O’Neill.

THE BATTLE TO become the next GAA President takes place tonight at Croke Park with three candidates in the race to replace Liam O’Neill.

The election takes place at the opening of this year’s GAA Congress with Wexford’s Sheamus Howlin, Cavan’s Aogán O Fearghail and Kerry’s Sean Walsh all in the hunt to become the new president in 2015.

The election takes place at 8.30pm in Croke Park with the announcement of the result of the ballot expected around 9.30pm followed by the new President’s address.

But who are the three candidates involved?

Seamus Howlin (Wexford)

Howlin is hoping to become the third Wexford president. Previously the Model County have had PD Breen (1924-27) and Michael Kehoe (1949-52) as heads of the association.

Howlin is from the St Martin’s club in Wexford, a dual senior club who won the county senior football championship last year and the county senior hurling championship in 2008.

He is a former chairman of the Wexford county board and Leinster Council while he is currently a GAA trustee.
